 Summer is here and for many that means a family road trip. Whether you're going across the state or across the country, make sure your vehicle is in good working condition to prevent a break-down or, even worse, an accident along the way. Before you pack up the car, take the time to check these things to ensure an uneventful trip, at least when it comes to the condition of your car.
1. Check the oil. Remove the dipstick to confirm you have enough oil and don't have a leak somewhere. If it's almost time for an oil change, go ahead and have it done before you leave.
2. Check all fluids: brake, power steering, transmission and coolant levels.
3. Inspect hoses for cracking and make sure clamps are not loose.
4. Change the air filter if it hasn't been done recently.
5. If your battery is more than a couple of years old, you may want to replace it, or at least get it checked.
6. Inspect tires for wear, cracks or other visible blemishes. Make sure they are properly inflated.
7. Check that your jack and spare tire are in the vehicle, and that the spare is properly inflated too.
8. Purchase or make a travel first aid kit for the car. Hopefully you won't need it, but even small nuisances, such as minor abrasions or bee stings, will not slow you down if you're prepared.
If your car is properly maintained, you have less chance of an incident along the way. By giving your vehicle a thorough inspection before a road trip, you'll be sure the vacation memories you bring home with you will be all positive.
